Funding for Student Research and Experiential Learning

Student Experience Grants

These funds were made possible by a gift from a generous donor to ensure that SoC Undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need have equal access to out-of-classroom learning experiences. These experiences include, but are not limited to, research support, local travel, and conference attendance.

SoC Summer Research Assistant Grants

The Summer Research Assistant Grant allows students to participate in a paid research assistant position relevant to their field of study, providing first-hand experience in the conceptualization and conduct of research. While the program provides students with the hard skills needed to succeed in a research lab, it also allows them to be a part of the research process and contribute to important projects in meaningful ways.

SoC Summer Internship Grants

Funded by the generosity of donors, the SoC Internship Award program enables School of Communication undergraduate majors to pursue unpaid or low paid internships during the summer. These awards provide a $3500 grant that can help offset living expenses over the summer.

SoC Experiential Learning Conference & Travel Grants

Provided by a generous donor, the Experiential Learning Conference & Travel Grants provides funding for expenses associated with travel, accommodations, and attendance to conferences and other professional development events.

SoC Early Research Experience Awards (EREA)

First-year undergraduates are eligible to apply for an Early Research Experience Award (EREA), which pairs them with a faculty member specializing in a topic of interest to the student. During this time students will engage in at least 100 hours of research work and earn a monetary award for their contributions.

Office of Undergraduate Research Summer Undergraduate Research Grants (SURG)

SURGs provide students with a stipend to cover living expenses for eight weeks of full-time research on an independent academic or creative project, in all fields of study. Using proposed methodology to provide insight around pressing questions, students will be involved in multiple aspects of the research process.

Office of Undergraduate Research Summer Undergraduate Research Grants – Advanced (Advanced SURG)

Advanced SURG is available to students that have already received a Summer Undergraduate Research Grant (SURG) and require additional funding for the continuation of projects or the completion of new ones. Similar to SURG, Advanced-SURG provides students with a stipend to cover the living expenses for eight weeks of full-time research on their project of interest.

Office of Undergraduate Research Conference Travel Grants (CTG)

The conference Travel Grants provide funding to offset the expenses of presenting your projects or research at conferences and exhibitions. With up to 50% of expenses covered, students can communicate their research findings in professional settings, network with other researchers and expand their understanding of the scope and nature of academic research.

Office of Undergraduate Research AY Undergraduate Research Grants (URG)

Open to all fields of study, the Academic Year Research Grants provide students with funding to support the expenses associated with executing an independent academic or creative project. The Grant is connected to either an independent study or thesis seminar and requires multiple aspects of the research process including data collection, analysis and synthesis of results.

Office of Undergraduate Research AY Undergraduate Research Assistant Program (URAP)

The Undergraduate Research Assistant Program (URAP) offers students the opportunity to assist faculty members with their actual research and/or creative projects. This program allows students to learn about research practices and realities from faculty mentors without the burden of having to come up with an independent project.

NU Office of Fellowships

The Office of Fellowships offers competitive awards that pay students to explore multiple areas within their field of interest. Fellowships can award students for engaging in creative, research or community-project grants, academic study scholarships, or professional-development internships.

Northwestern Career Advancement Summer Internship Grant Program (SIGP)

The Summer Internship Grant Program was established to support current Northwestern undergraduate students with a demonstrated financial need who are participating in unpaid internships. This is a funding source for undergraduates who have accepted (or who are planning on securing) an unpaid internship or summer experience in an industry that traditionally does not pay their interns.

Acting and Music Theatre Showcase Grants

This grant provides financial assistance to senior acting and musical theatre undergraduate students who have been selected to participate in the Senior Performance Showcase opportunities over spring break and towards the end of spring quarter. All students that are selected are invited to perform for an audience of New York Talent Agents and casting directors to gain insight about the industry and make contacts for their professional careers.
