Chicago Field Studies

Chicago Field Studies (CFS) is a for-credit internship program through the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, but open to undergraduate students from any college within Northwestern. Students may apply to CFS for a quarter of their choosing, including the summer. Once accepted, students work with a CFS advisor to be matched with an internship for the duration of their CFS quarter. Students will also be enrolled in a seminar-style CFS course related to their internship or industry.

CFS can count as a full 4 credit course, or as variable credit (1-4 units). As such, students who opt for variable credit during the Fall, Winter, or Spring may participate in CFS and still enroll in 1-2 other traditional Northwestern courses. In the School of Communications, only one unit of CFS may apply to a distribution requirement, and the three remaining CFS credits may apply to electives. However, additional restrictions may apply depending on a student’s other coursework, such as practica, independent studies, or internships registered with EPICS , so students should consult with their SoC advisor on how credits may be applied.
